Nonprofit salary benchmarking

Build a salary comparison around the organizations that actually matter.

Select a leadership role and define a relevant peer group. 990Search turns public Form 990 compensation records into online average, median, and percentile benchmarks.

Role

Benchmark salaries by job title

Choose standardized positions while retaining the reported filing title as source evidence.

Scale

Compare organizations of similar size

Use available expense and asset bands to avoid combining fundamentally different peer organizations.

Location

Compare nonprofit salaries by state

Start nationally, then narrow to regional, state, or county results where sufficient observations exist.

What makes a useful nonprofit compensation benchmark?

A useful benchmark documents the position, source period, geography, organization type, financial scale, compensation threshold, observation count, and statistical method. A large database alone does not make every record comparable.

Support compensation-reasonableness research

Comparable salary data may support board, attorney, accountant, and compensation-consultant research. It does not replace legal, tax, accounting, valuation, or employment advice, and the final peer-group judgment remains the user’s responsibility.
